Unlocking Local File Links in Chrome with Local Explorer Chrome Extension

Are you tired of not being able to open local file links directly in your web browser ? Say goodbye to this frustration with the Local Explorer Chrome extension . This powerful tool allows you to effortlessly browse and open local file links with just a click.

The Local Explorer extension empowers you to enable and open local file links in their associated applications. Whether it's a folder link that opens up Windows Explorer or a .docx file that seamlessly launches MS Word, this extension provides a seamless experience.

Not only can you open local file links on your hard disk drives, but you can also access files and folders in Azure Active Directory or your company's shared folders. Even mapped network drives can be easily accessed directly on corporate websites or local host sites.

  • C:\Users\my_user_name\Documents ("My Documents" folders)
  • \\10.0.0.1\shared\local\folders\files (network drive)
  • W:\folder\ and W:\folder\file.docx (on webpages they're "file:///W:/folder/" and "file:///W:/folder/file.docx")

Enhancements and Notes

- Please note that Local Explorer currently supports Windows only. This extension was originally built for our in-house system and is completely free to use. If you encounter any issues, please feel free to contact us at [email protected] or click the "Send Feedback" button before leaving a negative review.

- We are excited to announce that the latest version of Local Explorer (2022.11.30) now supports Unicode characters. This means you can now access local file links and folders that contain Unicode characters without any hassle.

- We would also like to address concerns about antivirus warnings. Rest assured, these were false positives. We have rebuilt our Integration module to ensure a secure and reliable browsing experience. For more information, please visit http://goo.gl/qDNGP7.

Enabling Local File Links: A Simple Guide

Due to security reasons, web pages are not allowed to read or write local resources on hard drives. To enable local file links with Local Explorer, follow these simple steps:

  1. Add the Local Explorer extension to your Chrome or Edge browser and enable the "Allow access to file URLs" option.
  2. In the Options page, set your preferred default folder and save your settings.
  3. For Windows users, download and install the Local Explorer Integration module from http://goo.gl/trX9bB. Run the "LocalExplorer-Setup.exe" file once to complete the integration with Windows Explorer. Now, you're all set to open local file links while browsing the web.

For enterprise users, you can perform a silent install of the Integration module using the following command line: LocalExplorer-Setup.exe /S

Experience the convenience of accessing local file links directly in your web browser with the Local Explorer Chrome extension. Say goodbye to the hassle of switching between applications and embrace a seamless browsing experience today!

DON'T WORK ON Chrome ver.108.0.5359.125(Official Build) (64 bit) Chrome will change the Link be like "unsafe:localexplorer:\\svr01\TEMP.PDF" according to its security policy. IF YOU REMOVE THE "unsafe:" PART YOU CAN OPEN THE LOCAL LINK. Can you do some update to remove the "unsafe:" part automatically?
